Si ottiene sottraendo dal valore di acquisto la somma degli ammortamenti già operati, o, secondo un'altra pratica, è pari al valore di mercato del bene o dell'attività considerata. Questo termine in analisi finanziaria viene utilizzato per indicare il valore netto per titolo degli investimenti ( net asset value ), che si ottiene prima sottraendo dal totale delle attività le immobilizzazioni immateriali, le passività correnti e i titoli azionari privilegiati o a reddito fisso. Dividendo, poi, il valore ottenuto per il numero di obbligazioni o azioni, a seconda dello scopo della valutazione che si vuole perseguire.
